Many different types of AOX are needed to deal with the many types of ROS. Each AOX is uniquely suited to neutralize the toxic effects of specific ROS. For example, one catalase molecule can neutralize 40,000,000 hydrogen peroxide molecules every second. However if the pH falls below 7.2 the effectiveness of the enzyme is greatly reduced. Enzymatic function is also reduced during hypothermia.
